Does Your Skin Absorb Chemicals?
How important is it to use 100% natural or organic products? Does your skin really absorb chemicals? There are some scientific studies covering certain areas of this question, but more information is needed. It is important to differentiate absorption into the skin from absorption into the bloodstream. Very little of what goes on your skin is going to make it into the bloodstream. Here is what we know:
- Your skin is your first line of defense. If you protect your skin from damage, it can protect you from many harsh chemicals. (Medications that are designed to be absorbed are a different matter.) If you have cuts in your skin or damage of any kind, you have a greater chance of absorption.
- The substances or amounts of substances that get absorbed depend on the size and type of the molecules, the amount of time you’ve been in contact with them, and the temperature.
-Chemicals like ethanol or DMSO can temporarily disrupt the skin’s barrier to increase absorption. Retinol, hyaluronic acid and ceramides also penetrate the skin.
While it is a relief to realize that skin is a great defense mechanism, many people need to avoid harsh chemicals to protect their sensitive skin. If you have a history of skin reactions, you probably have already noticed that natural or organic skincare products are less irritating to your skin. Even natural products can be irritating if you are sensitive to certain essential oils, or if the essential oils are not diluted sufficiently or have a proper carrier oil.
