Oak Tree Preservation
The best way to protect oak trees is to educate as many people as possible about these simple things we should all be doing, or not doing. Please help us spread the word!
- Avoid pruning any oak tree during the growing season. Wounds in oak trees at that time of year can draw pests that carry disease. Oak trees can spread these diseases through their root systems causing vast damage.
- Avoid moving firewood between locations as this can spread pests and diseases.
- Douglas Fir, other trees and invasive plants can crowd out oak trees and kill them off. Keep encroaching seedlings from growing under any oak canopy, plus a buffer zone beyond that.
- Avoid watering mature trees or poor irrigation leading to overly wet soil. This can cause root rot and limit acorn production. Do water young oak trees for the first few years.
- Protect oak root systems from construction projects, heavy vehicles or digging.
- Plant oak trees and protect seedlings.
This is not an exhaustive list of course, but just following these six guidelines will make a huge difference. Thank you so much!
