Skin Reactions to Natural Products

If you use a 100% natural product your expectation might be that you’ll have the best skin you’ve ever had! (We’re not counting baby skin.) This may be true for some people and not others. Those who have seriously sensitive skin their whole lives usually figure out the triggers pretty quickly. It is possible, however, to develop a sensitivity that you’ve never had before.

Essential oils are wonderful, but on their own, they will irritate skin. Essential oils need to be diluted in a proper carrier or they are too harsh. Normal dilution rates that are fine for the majority might not do it for everyone. If you react to a 100% natural product, it could be the essential oil causing the problem.

Lye soap, while 100% natural, can be too harsh for some skin types. The amount of exposure matters as well. If you are soaking your hands, they may react more than if you wash quickly in the sink.

If your hands peel periodically, think about whether the water you’re using could be too hot. Sometimes skincare products take the blame for hot water.

Using a natural lotion on your face could potentially be too oily and lead to acne breakouts. Make sure to match the type of face lotion to your skin type. (Acne breakouts on legs could actually be an infection, see our lotion germicidals blog!)
